The ACLU has begun awarding students who blow the whistle on constitutional violations with college scholarships. Hey, I wish that had been the case in my hometown of Sterling, Mass. back in the days when me and my classmates were all made to stand and say the pledge of allegiance – although it did provide a good opportunity for shooting spitballs.
The New Jersey Law Journal reports that one such lucky student winner is former Kearny, New Jersey high school student Matthew LaClair who, in 2006, recorded his history teacher’s rantings about religion which included the prophesy that those who do not believe in Jesus’ teachings are destined for hell.
Remarkably, LaClair’s complaints were initially brushed aside by the high school administration until he produced the recording, at which point, backed by the ACLU, the teacher’s evangelizing was stopped and the school consented to teacher training about the separation of church and state.
LaClair was one of 15 students around the nation who won $5,000 scholarships from the ACLU. Sounds like Mr. LaClair may be on the path to a bright future as a lawyer.
